천국이 없다고 상상해 보세요.

It's easy if you try
하려고만 하면 쉬운 일이랍니다.

(그러니까 마음 먹으면 그리 어려운 일이 아니란 뜻이죠?)

No hell below us
우리 아래 지옥도 없고

Above us only sky
위에는 그저 하늘 만이 있는

(여기서 하늘은 천국을 의미하는 하늘 나라가 아니라 그냥 물리적인 의미의 하늘입니다. ‘하늘과 땅’ 할 때의 하늘이죠.)

모든 사람이

Sharing for today
그저 오늘을 위해 서로 나누며 사는 모습을 상상해 보세요.

(앞날을 걱정할 필요없이 사람들이 함께 나누며 사는 모습을 상상해 보란 뜻이죠? 여기서 John Lennon은 ‘sharing for today’라고 했지만 요즘에는 ‘living for today’라고 많이 합니다.)

자, 이제 2절 들어볼까요?

2절 가사 해석해 보겠습니다.

Imagine there's no countries

나라란 게 없다고 상상해 보세요.
It isn't hard to do

그렇게 어려운 일이 아니랍니다.

(상상하기 그렇게 어려운 일이 아니랍니다. hard, 딱딱하다는 뜻도 있지만 difficult와 같은 의미로 어렵다는 뜻으로도 쓰이죠?)

Nothing to kill or die for

누군가를 죽여야 할 일도, 무엇인가를 위해 죽어야 할 이유도 없는

And no religion too
그리고 종교란 것도 없는

(독실한 종교인들은 이 구절을 부를 때 ‘And one religion too’, ‘하나의 종교 만이 있는’ 이라고 고쳐서 부르기도 한다고 하네요.)
Imagine all the people

모든 사람들이
Living life in peace

평화롭게 사는 모습을 상상해 보세요.
(peace 앞에 in을 붙이면 평화 속에, 평화롭게라는 뜻입니다. 반대로 ‘in war’ 하면 전쟁중이다, 싸우고있다는 뜻이죠?)
